It's been a parts weekend for me. Got a non-ac fan knob and non-ac hvac crossover tube from Planet Miata, the Retro Modern door pulls came in, the Eunos Roadster door sills came in, and I got a set of FM frame rails and strut brace from a local seller. I'm gonna switch out the door panels with a friend who has some without armrest holes. Here's some potato-tastic pics to drool over...

(Idk much about big scary car parts, so bear with me!)

What do strut braces do? Stiffen the suspension?

The frame rails in the miata are a weak point and reinforcing them provides a stiffer chassis for the suspension to do its job better. Basically the main point of chassis bracing is to stiffen up the whole chassis to provide a solid working platform that has very little flex so all the bumps in the road and cornering forces can be damped by the suspension and not by the flexing of the cars chassis.

Sorry, I saw you specifically asked about the "strut" brace. In a miata the front uses shocks so the benefit to bracing the two shock towers minimizes the cowl shake while traveling down a rough road and has a minor role in stiffening up the front suspension. If it were a car that uses Macpherson struts then tying the strut towers together would have a bigger impact as the two strut towers incur a larger amount of force causing the strut towers to like flexing inwards on each other. By rigidly mounting a brace between the strut towers you are effectively minimizing the flex and increasing the rigidity and allowing the suspension to do its job.

Nice round of upgrades. I think my next venture will be sway bars..
